Simple Weed Control Tips For You to Try

by Julius Manninen

Are weeds threatening to ruin your otherwise glorious garden? As the bane of many a gardener's life, weeds can soon grow out of control when you don't take the right steps towards resolving them. Here are some easy tips that anyone can try.

Don't Disturb Weed Seeds

The weeds you see on the surface of your garden only represent part of the problem. A few centimeters below the surface, you'll find weed seeds that aren't yet receiving enough sunlight to germinate. When you're removing weeds from one area, focus on removing them from the ground and culling their roots. Try to avoid tilling the soil there, as you may bring seeds to the surface that then have a chance to grow and flourish.

Pull After Rainfall

Trying to pull weeds from the ground when it is dry can feel like back-breaking work. Additionally, there's a chance you'll leave some roots in place, which can result in more plants than you started with. To make your work easier and your efforts more successful, try pulling them out after rainfall. The ground is more supple, so you're more likely to remove the weeds from the roots. To further increase your chances of success, wear gloves that increase your traction.

Try Mulching

Mulching is an effective natural way to keep weeds from growing. It involves adding layers of organic matter such as hay, wood bark, newspaper and old clothes to the surface of your garden where other plants are growing. The mulch will act as a physical barrier, and unlike other forms of weed management, it doesn't involve the use of chemicals that could result in surrounding plants dying. Make sure you apply your mulch early into the growing season so that it has a chance to act early.

Remove the Weeds' Heads

It isn't always possible to pull weeds out of the ground, especially when they have strong roots that hold them in place. When this is the case, try chopping off their heads instead. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, removing their heads means they're less likely to seed and cause other weeds to grow. This tactic is particularly useful when it comes to annual weeds that may only seed once per year.

Try the Professionals

When your usual weed control methods aren't working it's a good idea to call in a professional. They usually have access to stronger chemicals and know how to apply them without placing other plants in your garden at risk. When you let them do the hard work for you, you'll enjoy rapid results that last.
